“When I pray I speak to God, when I study God speaks to me.” - Rabbi Louis Finkelstein

At Ankeny United Church, we recognize that we are never too old to dig deeper into faith, or to learn something new about ourselves. Whether alone or in the fellowship of others, we know that one of the most powerful ways we grow closer to the divine is through learning. Through our various programs and offerings, you will be encouraged to think in new and exciting ways about your faith, and how it is still speaking to our world, today.

Bible Study

At Ankeny United Church, we take the Bible very seriously, but not literally. That means we honor the Bible's original context and explore who the authors might have been, what audience they were trying to reach, and for what purpose. Whether it is your first time reading the Bible or the millionth, there is always something new to uncover within its sacred pages. To help facilitate this learning and study, Bible studies are offered at various points throughout the year, to encourage us to continue growing in our faith.

Adult Education

Ever have questions about the Bible or your faith that you always wanted to know, but were afraid to ask? At our Adult Education sessions, no topic is off the table for faithful discussion, and no question is too taboo or silly to be asked. We don’t ask you to check your brain at the door when you hang up your coat and hat, but instead encourage faithful questioning and deeper understanding. Adult Education series cover a wide range of topics, such as “what happened to the disciples after Jesus died?” to “who were all the gods mentioned in the Hebrew Scriptures and what did their followers believe?” If you are someone who likes to learn and is not afraid to grow, then our Adult Education sessions are perfect for you.

Coffee Shop Hours

Want to meet with the pastor but you’re intimidated by stopping by the church office? Not to worry! To facilitate a more casual atmosphere for discussion and learning, every Thursday Pastor Arik visits a local coffee shop to host his own “coffee shop office hours” where people can stop by for coffee, food, and fellowship. Whether you have questions about your faith or want to learn more about who we are and what we are all about, these coffee shop hours are a great way to explore what Ankeny United Church is all about. The coffee shops rotate each month, so call the office, read our newsletter, or reach out to the pastor to find out which coffee shop he’ll be at next!

Theology on Tap

Looking for a less formal place to gather for fellowship and theological conversation? Join us at a local bar once a month in the evening for a time of community. From deep philosophical topics to talking about sports or local events, this is an opportunity for us to grow closer together in an informal atmosphere. The local bar rotates each month, so reach out to the church or read the newsletter to find out the date and location of the next Theology on Tap!

Book Club

Periodically, there are times when a group from the church will get together to do a book club as a small group. While most books chosen are related to faith or spirituality in some way, it is not a requirement for the book to be chosen by the group. If you are an avid reader and are looking for a point of connection and community, then consider joining our book club group as we learn and grow, together.
