Joseph's brothers did some pretty bad things to him. But he was able to get away from their injury, spend time with God, and be healed (and it didn't hurt that he came to be the most powerful person in Egypt). Then he forgave them. Forgiveness isn't earned, and isn't owed, but we can work to heal the hurts we inflict.
