Billboards for Shame

Preacher:
Passage: Mark 8:31-38
Service Type:

Romans used the crucifix to remind people of the consequences of opposing the occupation. Fear of the crucifix, and of the ultimate consequences, kept people in line. Jesus sought to invert these crucifixes, making them signs of release and triumph rather than death and defeat. Likewise, we can be trapped by our feelings of shame and fear. Shining light onto the things that make us feel shame let us build bridges with others and move into reconciliation. So, if we feel shame, let us understand why, and admit it, and show love for one another as we accept Jesus's challenge to lift up our cross and find ways to love one another into reconciliation.
