At Ankeny UCC, children and youth are a part of all our activities. Whether it is in Sunday School before worship, during Children’s time in worship, working in the garden alongside adults, singing and ringing bells as special music, in our ecumenical Vacation Bible School, or visiting nursing homes, children can be seen wherever Ankeny UCC serves.
We have education hour from 9:15-10:15 for pre-k through middle school every Sunday during the program year, with a rotation of teachers through all the classrooms. For our Pre-k through 5th graders, we use the Shine Curriculum, designed to engage their minds and lead them to question the world around them and the meanings of God’s words throughout time as the beginning of a lifelong journey with faith, doubt, and reason.
We prepare middle schoolers for confirmation by telling and retelling the stories of the Bible with Sparkhouse’s Echo the Story.
And if you have ever found that your faith has changed since your own Sunday School years, join us for #UnexpectedQuestions, an informal gathering focused on talking through the questions kids ask and figuring out what we think and how to articulate it for others. They frequently meet outside of Sunday church for book studies and devotions around town (usually at Porch Light).
During the year, we also host seasonal Bible studies on Wednesday nights to explore questions of faith and history, in addition to small book studies on God’s place in contemporary events.
